Building a Door

Our son broke the screen door on the back of our house. Unfortunately, it is very old, and the frame an odd size. The rain was getting in and swelling and damaging the frame and floor, so we had to do something. Out of money to buy something, and no time fora special order anyhow, I decided to build a replacement out of as many things I could scavenge as possible. Here is what I came up with.

This is, of course, the outside view of the door. I also built an awning. The original was damaged back when our windows were put in. I still need to paint a bunch.

Here you can see the awning construction. I scavenged it completely from around the yard and from scraps. Part of it comes for the neighbors house where they are putting up new siding and ripped out the old.

Isn’t it pretty? Can you believe this was all scraps? Except for the hardware anyway.

This is the inside. It’s not painted yet, so you can see the 1×4’s and the siding off the neighbors house. The window is an old storm window I found in the barn.

I used peg construction, drilling holes and driving in doweling that I glued in place. I caulked everything, and am working on the painting still. The neighbor had a piece of molding with a lip just the right size to edge the top and middle and hold the window in place. I like it!
